2020 Mazda CX-30 vs. 2020 Buick Encore

If you need a convenient SUV that delivers big value in a small package, you might have already discovered the Mazda CX-30 and Buick Encore. Let’s put them side by side to see which one belongs in your driveway.

Performance

If you’re looking for a truly exciting, sporty driving performance, you won’t find it with the Buick Encore, but you will find it in the 2020 Mazda CX-30. The CX-30 runs on a 2.5-liter engine with 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, which is significantly more powerful and exciting than the Encore’s 1.4-liter engine with 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, the CX-30 is more fuel efficient than the Buick Encore in both highway and combined driving, which is especially impressive given its more powerful performance. You’ll find that driving the CX-30 is a dream – it’s tight maneuvering and classic Mazda drivability make it fun on any terrain. On that note, only the CX-30 offers off-road traction assist, so no adventures are off-limits.

Interior and Amenities Review

You spend a lot of time in your vehicle each day, and you deserve to be comfortable. The interior of the CX-30 – even in the base trim – is crafted with only high-quality materials and handsome styling. An 8.8-inch infotainment display is easy to use and navigate, and is larger than the Encore’s 8-inch display. Additionally, the driver information display on the CX-30’s dash is full-color and clear with a 7-inch screen, dwarfing the Encore’s 4.2-inch driver display. Enviable amenities are available from the base trim in the CX-30, and the upper trims only grow more luxurious. The Encore offers the same number of trims as the CX-30 (four), but doesn’t include as many features in any trim. In fact, even the Essence, the Encore’s highest trim level, still has features that can only be accessed through additional packages and add-ons. The Encore is already more expensive than its near-luxury competitor, the CX-30, and it doesn’t include nearly as many premium amenities or features. The CX-30’s four trims provide an extensive, complete list of features that don’t require additional purchases – and at a lower price point!

Safety Features

Nearly every auto maker offers a standard smart safety suite in their new vehicles. It’s become an expectation from modern drivers, and for good reason. Everyone wants to stay safer on the roads. However, Buick declined to make any driver assistance features standard on the 2020 Encore, offering their Safety Package I as an available feature in the first three trims and standard in the highest trim. This package only includes a measly three features: rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot alert, and a 120-volt power outlet. Buick’s Safety II package that offers an in-vehicle air ionizer, rain-sensing wipers, parking assist, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning is not available in the first three packages, and is an optional add-on feature for the highest Essence trim.

Mazda knows that being safe on the road shouldn’t come with an additional price tag, which is why the CX-30 comes standard with lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, radar cruise control with stop and go, a driver attention alert, and high beam control. Additional safety features in the higher trims include blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert in the second trim level, and an adaptive front-lighting system in the highest trim.
